Wear a Peridot or for thee,
No conjugal fidelity,
The August born without this stone,
`Tis said, must live unloved alone.

The traditional birthstone for August is the Peridot, a beautiful vivid green/gold stone.

The Peridot is often found in Egyptian jewellery and is regarded as the national gemstone of Egypt, referred to as the "gem of the sun" because of it's beautiful golden accents. It is even suggested that many of the gemstones which Cleopatra wore were not emeralds, as often thought, but peridots. The Roman's referred to the stone as "an evening emerald" because of the way it glows under evening light.

The peridot is unusual as it is one of the only gemstones to occur in one color - olive, although the shades vary depending on iron content. All of our natural August birthstone Claddagh rings are set with natural heart shaped peridots.

In the past peridots were mainly sourced from St. Johns Island, Egypt but they are now sourced from deposits across the globe including: Arizona, Brazil, Pakistan & China.

The peridot is thought to bring confidence, faithfulness and is supposed to rid the wearer of envious thoughts.
