The gleaming Ruby should adorn,
All those who in July are born,
For thus they'll be exempt and free,
From lover's doubts and anxiety.

For those of you born in July you are lucky enough to have one of the four precious stones as your birthstone: the ruby.

There has always been as strong fascination with rubies throughout history. Although diamonds are now considered to be the most precious of gemstones, that was not always the case. Rubies have been highly treasured from the beginnings of human civilization, mentioned in the bible and ancient Indian texts.

A good ruby is determined by color and size. Large rubies are much rarer to find than large diamonds, therefore they are highly valued. The most preferred color is a deep blood red color, which is known as "Pigeon's Blood Ruby". Rubies are mainly sourced from: Thailand, Burma and Madagascar.

The ruby is closely related to the sapphire, in fact the ruby is a red sapphire - identical in compound structure, they are both made up of the same element:  chromium. The only difference is the color.

One of the most famous or infamous Ruby pieces has to be the Cartier Ruby Suite given to Elizabeth Taylor from her husband Mike Todd. The set was made up of a necklace, bracelet and earrings. With no access to a mirror she admired her gift in the reflection of the pool... or so the story goes.

Rubies are symbolic of devotion, honesty, courage and happiness and have become a symbol of passion, making them a the perfect token of love and devotion.
